Safe storage of green beans

Mung beans are among the most challenging legumes to store properly. It's a common issue that, after some time, many mung beans become empty shells, losing their quality and value. Why does this happen? The main cause is infestation by mung bean weevils, also known as bean ox or bean monkey. These pests not only affect mung beans but also attack other small beans such as adzuki beans and kidney beans. Proper storage of mung beans depends heavily on effective pest control. Mung bean weevils can complete 4 to 6 generations per year. The larvae overwinter inside the bean pods and emerge as adults in the spring. Once active, they fly into granaries and lay eggs—each female lays about 70 to 80 eggs, with each bean containing 3 to 5 eggs on average. After hatching, the larvae burrow into the beans, feeding and developing until they become adults. This entire life cycle takes between 24 to 45 days, depending on environmental conditions. The ideal temperature for their growth and reproduction is between 29.5°C and 32.5°C, with a relative humidity of 68% to 95%. To prevent and control mung bean weevil infestations, several methods can be used: 1. **Fumigation Method**: For every 500 kg of mung beans, use 3 to 5 grams of aluminum phosphide, wrapped in paper and placed evenly in the bag. Ensure the temperature is above 20°C, and let it fumigate for 3 days. Afterward, open the storage area and allow it to ventilate. Remove the residue after 7 days. 2. **Sealed Storage Method**: After sun-drying the beans, place them in an enamel container surrounded by wheat stalks or straw, then tightly seal it for at least half a month. This method suffocates up to 98-100% of the weevils. 3. **High-Temperature Pest Control**: Store the beans in a high-temperature environment (around 56°C) to kill any existing pests. 4. **Hot Water Soaking**: Soak the beans in water at 60–80°C for 2 minutes, then dry and store. However, this method may reduce the germination rate, so it's not recommended for seeds. The best time to treat mung beans for pests is within 10 days after harvest. After treatment, it’s important to isolate the beans and ensure the storage area is well-sealed to prevent re-infestation. Additionally, the beans must be thoroughly dried before storage to maintain quality and extend shelf life. Proper handling and timely intervention are key to keeping mung beans safe and valuable for long-term use.
