Relationship between pre- and post-pregnancy mothers' medication and childhood childhood leukemia

Release date: 2007-06-18

A study published in the Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study (1995–2002) explored the relationship between a mother's pre- and post-pregnancy health, including childhood illnesses and medication use, and the risk of childhood leukemia. Led by Kwan ML and colleagues in Oakland, California, the research aimed to understand how maternal health factors might influence the development of leukemia in children. The study included 365 children under 15 years old diagnosed with leukemia, matched with control subjects based on age, gender, Latin ethnicity, and maternal race. Researchers gathered detailed information about the mothers' medical history, including illnesses and medication use before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and even while breastfeeding, through interviews and statistical analysis using conditional logistic regression. The findings revealed that a history of influenza or pneumonia in mothers was significantly linked to an increased risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in their children (OR=1.89, 95% CI: 1.24–2.89). However, this association was not as strong for non-high-risk ALL cases (OR=1.41, 95% CI: 0.75–2.63). Similarly, a history of sexually transmitted diseases in mothers also showed a similar increase in leukemia risk. On a more positive note, the use of iron supplements during pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk of ALL (OR=0.67, 95% CI: 0.47–0.94). Based on these results, the researchers concluded that maternal infections, such as influenza, pneumonia, or sexually transmitted diseases, could be potential risk factors for childhood leukemia. Additionally, they suggested that iron supplementation might play a protective role. These insights highlight the importance of maternal health during pregnancy and its long-term impact on child development. ——Midi Medical Network
