Gecko is a traditional medicinal material, and due to the limited supply, its purchase price is approximately 80 yuan per kilogram. If there are more wild geckos in the area, it's advisable to collect them during the right season. However, it's important to ensure that the geckos used for processing are alive and not harmed before preparation. To capture geckos, net bags are commonly used. During the process, care must be taken to avoid damaging their tails, as this can significantly reduce their market value.
The method of killing geckos should be done carefully to maintain quality. One way is to place the live geckos in a snake skin bag and pour boiling water into the bag, which will burn them quickly. Afterward, they should be removed immediately to prevent overcooking, which may damage the product. Another method is to place the gecko in a snake skin bag and submerge it in water, allowing it to suffocate. Freezing in the refrigerator is also an option. A fourth method involves gently tapping the geckos' heads, though this may affect the appearance of the final product.
Once killed, geckos can be either dried or sun-dried. Drying is a time-consuming process and is prone to spoilage if the weather is poor. The drying method typically involves digging a small pit on the ground or placing a thin iron plate with a layer of wheat straw mud. Sawdust is burned in the pit, and the geckos are placed inside to dry. It's crucial not to overheat them, as this can damage their structure. The geckos should be turned gently at intervals, but not too frequently, to prevent breaking. The drying process should be adjusted based on the quantity of geckos collected and the size of the pit.
For medicinal use, geckos with intact bodies, good color retention, and a brown-green abdomen are considered the highest quality. Proper handling and processing are essential to maintain their value and efficacy.
