Gecko is a traditional medicinal material, and due to the limited supply, its purchase price is approximately 80 yuan per kilogram. If there are more wild geckos in the area, it's advisable to collect them during the right season. When collecting, it's important to ensure the geckos are alive before processing, as dead ones may lose their medicinal value.
To capture geckos, use net bags or small containers to avoid injuring them. During the process, take care not to damage their tails, as this can reduce their market value. The method of killing the geckos should be done carefully to maintain their quality. There are several ways to do this:
1. Place the gecko inside a snake skin bag and pour boiling water into the bag. This will quickly kill the geckos without causing excessive damage. Remove them immediately to prevent overcooking.
2. Alternatively, place the gecko in a sealed bag and submerge it in water to suffocate it gently.
3. Freezing the geckos in the refrigerator is another safe option.
4. A more direct method is to tap the gecko’s head accurately, but this may affect the appearance of the final product.
Once killed, the geckos can be dried or sun-dried. Drying takes time and is sensitive to weather conditions. If the weather is bad, the geckos may rot easily. To dry them effectively, dig a small pit in the ground or place a thin iron plate with a layer of wheat straw mud on top. Then, place the geckos on the plate and burn sawdust in the pit to create gentle heat. Be careful not to overheat, as this can damage the geckos. Turn them gently at intervals, but not too frequently, to avoid breaking their bodies. The drying process should be adjusted based on the quantity of geckos collected and the size of the pit.
For medicinal purposes, the best geckos are those that remain intact, retain their natural color, and have a brown-green abdomen. Proper handling and drying techniques are essential to preserve their quality and effectiveness.
