When formulating a rabbit feed, it's essential to balance cost-effectiveness with production performance. The palatability of the feed also plays a crucial role—rabbits are more likely to eat and absorb nutrients from feeds they find appealing, which directly impacts their overall health and growth. Therefore, careful research and precise formulation are key to advancing scientific rabbit farming and ensuring high-quality, healthy rabbits.
The full-nutrition feed formula developed by the author for long-haired rabbits is not only nutritionally complete but also cost-effective and practical. This formula is now shared publicly as a reference for those interested in improving their rabbit feeding strategies.
(1) The scientifically balanced formula for long-haired rabbits includes: 17% corn, 24% bran, 21% cooked soybean meal, 3% imported fishmeal, 3% active yeast, 30% grass powder, 0.75% salt, 0.4% methionine, an appropriate amount of multivitamins, and trace minerals. It also includes concentrated cod liver oil for livestock and poultry, and 30 grams of olaquindox per 50 kilograms of feed.
(2) Important considerations when designing feed formulas:
1. Avoid using moldy or toxic ingredients, such as unprocessed rape cake or cottonseed cake, which can be harmful to rabbits.
2. Ensure accurate mixing ratios and even distribution, especially when incorporating additives. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding quantity and usage.
3. Raw soybean meal and raw soybeans contain trypsin inhibitors and urease, which can negatively affect long-haired rabbits. These should be cooked before use.
4. Avoid low-quality bone meal or feather meal to maintain feed hygiene and safety.
5. Prefer alfalfa meal as the primary grass powder, followed by peanut vine, weed, rice straw, and soybean stalk powders.
6. Limit grass powder to no more than 20% in the diet of young rabbits to avoid digestive issues.
7. Maintain consistent feed formulas once rabbits are weaned. Avoid changing the feed during this critical period to ensure stable nutrition and high productivity.
By following these guidelines, farmers can optimize their rabbit feeding programs, improve animal welfare, and achieve better economic returns. Proper feed formulation is not just about meeting nutritional needs—it's about creating a sustainable and efficient rabbit farming system.
