Autumn tomatoes often suffer from various diseases that can lead to fruit rot, significantly affecting yield and quality. Among the most common causes are three major diseases: soft rot, brown spot, and anthracnose. Effective prevention and control measures are essential to protect your tomato crops. Soft rot is a bacterial disease that primarily affects the stems and fruits of tomato plants. When it strikes the fruit, the skin becomes shiny, the flesh turns soft and rotten, and upon rupture, it emits a foul odor. The affected fruit may fall off easily and, after drying, turns white and stale. To manage this disease, it's important to act early. Before or at the first signs of infection, apply a 72% streptomycin sulfate soluble powder diluted at 4000 times or a 70% dexamethasone solution diluted at 1000 times. Spray every 8–10 days, adjusting the frequency based on the severity of the disease. Brown spot, caused by a fungal pathogen, mainly affects nearly mature fruits. Initially, light-brown spots appear on the shoulders or top of the fruit, gradually forming concentric rings that turn dark brown over time. The surface becomes rough, and when the fruit softens, a layer of gray mold may develop. For effective control, use a 25% propiconazole solution diluted at 800–1000 times or a 75% chlorothalonil solution diluted at 600–800 times. Apply the treatment once every 7–8 days, repeating 2–3 times for best results. Anthracnose, caused by a fungal pathogen, typically infects tomatoes before they begin to color. After incubation, small transparent spots appear on the fruit, which then expand into black, slightly sunken lesions with a distinct concentric ring pattern. In humid conditions, red, sticky exudates may form, eventually leading to fruit rot. To prevent this, spray 80% mancozeb wettable powder at 800 times dilution or 50% carbendazim wettable powder at 500 times during the green fruit stage. Apply the treatment every 8–10 days, and repeat it twice to effectively prevent disease development. By implementing these proactive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of disease and ensure healthier, higher-quality autumn tomato harvests. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are key to successful crop management.
