Fast fattening of ducks by feeding

For ducks that are not used for breeding, male and female adults that have been culled can be fattened through artificial feeding. This method is more efficient than traditional grazing and natural fattening, cutting the time in half while saving feed and boosting economic returns. Additionally, these ducks produce meat that is rich, tender, and juicy, making them ideal for roast duck, which gives them high commercial value. The artificial feeding method involves forcing ducks to swallow large amounts of high-energy feed, allowing them to gain weight and accumulate fat quickly. Here’s how it works: First, prepare the feed mixture. The formula includes 50% cornmeal, 20% sorghum, 10% sorghum flour, 5% barley, 5% sweet potato, 8% soybean cake, 1.5% bone meal, and 0.5% salt. Mix all ingredients with enough water to form a soft cake-like consistency. Alternatively, you can shape the mixture into small pills for easier hand-feeding. Next, the feeding process. When feeding, gently catch the duck and hold its body with your legs. Use your thumb and forefinger to gently close its upper beak, press down on the tongue with your middle finger, and lift the lower jaw with your ring and pinky fingers. With your right hand, take a piece of the cake or pill and carefully place it into the duck’s beak until it is full. It's recommended to feed four times a day—twice during the day and twice at night. In the first few days, the ducks may not adjust well to the new diet, so avoid overfeeding to prevent health issues like diarrhea. Once they adapt, gradually increase their food intake. Typically, the fattening period lasts about 15 days. Finally, post-feeding management. Ensure the ducks always have access to clean drinking water. Provide a 30-minute bath daily to help them stay healthy, and minimize their movement as much as possible. Keep the enclosure clean, well-ventilated, and filled with clean sand for comfort. Regular disinfection of the environment is also essential to maintain hygiene and prevent disease. (Wang Guixiang)
