For ducks that are not intended for breeding, adult males and females that have been culled can be fattened through artificial feeding. This technique is more efficient than traditional methods like grazing and natural fattening, cutting the time in half while saving feed and boosting economic returns. Additionally, the meat from these ducks is tender, juicy, and rich in flavor, making them ideal for roasted duck, which gives them high commercial value.
The artificial feeding method involves forcing ducks to consume large amounts of high-energy feed, allowing them to gain weight and store fat quickly. The process includes the following steps:
First, preparing the feed mixture. It consists of 50% cornmeal, 20% sorghum, 10% sorghum flour, 5% barley, 5% sweet potato, 8% soybean cake, 1.5% bone meal, and 0.5% salt. When mixing, enough water should be added to form a soft cake-like consistency. Alternatively, it can be made into small pills for easier hand-feeding.
Second, the feeding technique. When feeding, gently catch the duck and hold its body with your legs. Use your thumb and forefinger to grasp the lower jaw, press the tongue with your middle finger, and lift the lower beak with your other two fingers. With your right hand, place the cake or pill into the duck’s beak until it's full. Ideally, feed four times a day—twice during the day and twice at night. In the initial days, ducks may struggle to adapt to the new diet, so avoid overfeeding to prevent health issues. Once they get used to it, gradually increase their daily intake. Usually, the fattening period lasts about 15 days.
Third, post-feeding management. After feeding, ensure that ducks have access to clean drinking water at all times. Allow them to take a 30-minute bath each day and limit their movement as much as possible. Keep the enclosure clean, well-ventilated, and provide some clean sand for them to walk on. Regularly disinfect the environment to maintain hygiene and prevent disease.
