April is recognized as the "Month of the Military Child," and I thought it'd be a great opportunity to pause and reflect on the unique challenges that military life can bring to our little ones. Right now, I'm sitting cross-legged on the bed with my little boy, who's happily holding my hand, and I can't help but feel overwhelmed by gratitude for the blessings in our lives. We're all healthy, happy, and content—things that don't always come easily in our line of work.
But change is looming on the horizon. In just a few weeks, we'll be packing up and moving again. This won't be the first time for him—he was only one when we last relocated, so it didn't leave much of an impression—but this time around, he's older and more aware. He's already asking questions, bubbling with excitement, and repeatedly mispronouncing "Louisiana" as "Mo-isiana." It's adorable, but I know deep down that he doesn't fully grasp what moving means for his routine or friendships.
As much as I try to stay present and focus on the moment, I inevitably find myself worrying about the future. What happens when he's six and facing yet another move? Will he cling to his current school and friends, reluctant to leave? These thoughts creep into my mind despite my best efforts to let them go. Thankfully, I have an incredible support network of friends and family members who've walked this path before. Their advice and reassurance have been invaluable, and I'm grateful for their willingness to guide us through these transitions.
Even with their help, I still feel a pang of uncertainty. Moving is never easy, especially for young children. But I remind myself that kids are remarkably resilient. They adapt to change faster than adults often realize, finding joy in the simplest things and quickly forming bonds wherever they go. That said, I'm already making plans to ease the transition to our new home in New Orleans. Some of our closest friends have promised to visit this summer, which will undoubtedly make the adjustment smoother for everyone involved.
In the meantime, I'm soaking in every moment with my little guy. Hugs, laughter, and shared moments are my favorite ways to create lasting memories. And speaking of memories, we're expecting another addition to our family in August! Yes, this summer is shaping up to be anything but ordinary.
If you're reading this and you're a parent helping your child navigate change, I'd love to hear your tips and tricks. How do you prepare them for something as big as a move? What strategies have worked for you?
Until then, take a deep breath, cherish your kids, and remember—you're not alone in this journey.
