Egg laying water supply knowledge

Under normal conditions, each chicken requires approximately 110 ml of water per day in winter, around 280 ml in summer, and about 200 ml in spring and autumn. As the egg production rate increases, so does the need for water. During the peak egg-laying season, it is especially important to ensure a consistent and sufficient water supply to maintain both productivity and the overall health of the hens.

Chickens typically have three main drinking periods each day: around 8 a.m., 12 p.m., and 6 p.m. These times coincide with their natural activity cycles and light exposure. At about 8 a.m., chickens begin to receive light, either from the sun or artificial sources, which signals the start of their daily routine. By noon, they reach the peak of their egg-laying activity. After laying eggs, hens often feel very thirsty due to the energy expended during the process and will drink more water at this time. Around 6 p.m., as the daylight begins to fade, the hens prepare for rest. It’s crucial that they consume enough water before nightfall to stay hydrated throughout the night.

If hens fail to drink enough water during these key periods, it can lead to reduced egg production, dehydration, and even health issues. Providing clean, fresh water at regular intervals ensures that the flock remains healthy, comfortable, and productive. Monitoring water intake and adjusting based on temperature, season, and egg production levels can make a significant difference in the overall performance of the poultry operation.
