Main technical measures for restoring sugarcane after disaster

Due to the impact of Typhoon Peibian this year, sugarcane fields in Beihai City have suffered varying degrees of damage. To quickly restore production and ensure a successful harvest, it's essential to implement appropriate measures based on the specific conditions of each area. First, immediate drainage is crucial. For flooded sugarcane fields, water should be removed as soon as possible to prevent root rot and long-term waterlogging, which can lead to plant death. This step is vital for maintaining healthy root systems. Second, soil stabilization is necessary. For cane that has not yet died but has been knocked over, it should be propped up using bamboo ropes or similar materials. At the same time, soil should be reinforced through proper fertilization. Any cane that has been completely blown down should be cleared and used as planting material for the next season. Third, increasing fertilizer application can help affected cane recover. After stabilizing the soil, apply 20 kg of compound fertilizer per mu, or alternatively, 20 kg of phosphate fertilizer, 15 kg of urea, and 5 kg of potash. This will support regrowth and improve overall health. Fourth, pest and disease control must be strengthened. After flooding, conditions become more favorable for pests and diseases such as red rot, pineapple disease, leaf spot, head smut, cotton cane budworms, and locusts. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are essential to prevent outbreaks. Lastly, if more than 50% of the growing points have been damaged due to prolonged flooding in low-lying areas, it’s important to cut and remove the dead cane promptly. The land should then be plowed as soon as possible to plant early-season sugarcane or switch to alternative crops like sweet potatoes, vegetables, or corn. For less severely affected areas, where less than 50% of the cane is lost, remove the dead plants and focus on strengthening the care of the remaining crop. In cases of severe land degradation, consider planting high-value crops such as corn to reduce losses and maintain productivity.
