Effect of fenofibrate on diabetic retinopathy
An article recently published in The Lancet noted that taking fenofibrate in patients with type 2 diabetes helps reduce the chance of laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy. The study, titled "FIELD," included a total of 9,795 patients with type 2 diabetes who were 50-75 years of age who were randomized to receive a 200 mg/d fenofibrate-treated group and a placebo-treated group. After a mean follow-up of 5 years, fenofibrate reduced the proportion of patients receiving laser treatment for the first time due to macular edema and proliferative retinopathy by 31% and 30%, respectively. The researchers noted that fenofibrate as a hypolipidemic drug did not show significant differences between groups in the treatment and placebo groups in changing HDL levels, suggesting fenofibrate for diabetic retinopathy. The effect may be through a mechanism of action other than improving blood lipids and lowering blood pressure. ——Midi Medical Network
