Spinach leukoplakia is a common fungal disease that primarily affects the leaves of spinach plants. The symptoms usually start on the lower leaves, where small, round lesions appear with distinct edges. These lesions have a yellow-white center and are surrounded by a brown to purplish-brown margin. As the disease progresses, the affected areas turn into white patches. Under high humidity conditions, grayish fungal threads can be observed on the lesions. When the environment alternates between wet and dry, the central part of the lesions tends to crack easily.
The disease is caused by the fungus *Spinachella flavescens*. The pathogen survives in the soil during winter, and it spreads through wind and rain. The disease thrives in warm and humid conditions, especially when plants are weak or under stress.
To prevent spinach leukoplakia, it's important to implement proper cultural practices. First, maintain good field management to strengthen the plant’s natural resistance. This includes proper watering, balanced fertilization, and avoiding over-crowding. Second, after harvest, promptly remove and dispose of infected plant material. It should be buried deeply or burned to reduce the risk of reinfection. Finally, during the early stages of the disease, apply fungicides such as 50% carbendazim diluted at 800 times, or a Bordeaux mixture (1:0.5:160) to control the spread. Another effective option is 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder diluted at 700 times. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are key to managing this disease effectively.
