The fox fur is renowned for its vibrant color, soft texture, and luxurious fluff. It is considered one of the top three premium furs in the global market and is a significant export product for our country, offering substantial economic value. Every year, December marks the peak season for mature fox pelts. The following outlines the methods for humane execution, skinning, and initial processing of fox fur:
First, the method of execution must be quick and efficient to ensure minimal damage to the fur and maintain its quality. Common techniques include:
1. **Blunt Force Method**: A wooden club is used to strike the back or forehead of the fox, causing brain concussion and rapid death without damaging the pelt.
2. **Air Injection Method**: A syringe with a No. 7 needle is used to inject 10–20 ml of air directly into the heart, causing immediate cardiac arrest and ensuring a clean kill.
3. **Succinylcholine Injection**: A dose of 7–10 ml of succinylcholine chloride is injected intramuscularly, resulting in quick and painless death. This method is safe for the fur, as the drug does not leave harmful residues.
Once the fox has been humanely executed, it should be skinned immediately while the body is still warm. Delaying this step can make the skin difficult to remove and may lead to damage.
**Skinning Process**:
1. **Opening the Body**: Begin by cutting from the hind leg to the elbow joint on one side. Carefully separate the skin along the inner fur line, removing the anal area and hairless parts.
2. **Peeling the Skin**: Start by cutting off the tail and hind limbs, keeping the footpads intact. Hang the hind legs on a hook and peel the skin backward. Pull the edges and spread the fur. Make a small incision at the urethra and carefully remove the front limbs. Ensure the ears, nose, eyelids, and mouth remain attached to the skin.
**Initial Processing of the Fur**:
1. **Removing Fat**: Hang the pelt by the nose on a smooth board. Scrape the fat from the back using a knife, applying even pressure to avoid damaging the fur. Hard-to-remove fat on the limbs, tail, and head can be trimmed with scissors.
2. **Cleaning the Skin**: After scraping, wash the pelt thoroughly with clean sawdust to remove grease and dirt. Repeat the process until the skin is dry and free of residue. Brush off any remaining sawdust and scrub the fur to restore its shine and fluffiness. Use only resin-free, sieved sawdust for this process.
3. **Stretching and Drying**: Place the fur inside out on a tanning board, securing the ears and head with pins. Stretch the skin evenly to prevent shrinkage. Once partially dry (about 50–60%), turn it over and continue drying. Ensure the limbs, foot pads, and underbelly are properly stretched and dried to maintain quality.
This detailed process ensures that the fox fur remains in optimal condition for further processing and commercial use. Each step is crucial to preserving the beauty and value of the final product.
