Fox skin stripping and processing methods

The fox fur is renowned for its vibrant color, soft texture, and abundant fluff. It is considered one of the three major types of premium furs in the world and is a key export product for our country, offering significant economic returns. Every year, December marks the peak season for mature fox pelts. Below are detailed methods for the humane execution, skinning, and initial processing of fox fur. First, the execution process must be quick and efficient to avoid any damage or contamination of the fur. There are several commonly used techniques: 1. **Clubbing Method**: A wooden club is used to strike the back of the fox or the area above the eyes, causing the brain to shake and leading to a rapid death without harming the fur. 2. **Air Injection Method**: A 10-20 ml glass syringe with a No. 7 needle is used to inject air directly into the heart, causing it to rupture quickly and ensuring a fast and clean death. 3. **Drug Injection Method**: A common drug such as succinylcholine chloride is injected intramuscularly at a dose of 7-10 ml. The fox dies within 3-5 minutes, and the fur remains undamaged and uncontaminated. The residual drug in the body is non-toxic and does not affect the quality of the pelt. After execution, the skin must be removed while the body is still warm. Delaying this step can make the skin difficult to separate from the flesh. 1. **Opening the Skin**: Use scissors to cut from one hind leg up to the elbow. Carefully remove the anal area by peeling along the inner side of the fur, then cut through the middle of the tail and the base of the spine to fully open the skin. 2. **Skinning Process**: Start by removing the hind legs and tail, keeping the footpads intact. Hang the hind legs on hooks and peel the skin backward, stretching it carefully. Make an incision along the ankle to remove the front legs. Ensure that the ears, nose, eyelids, and mouth remain attached to the skin. Next comes the initial processing of the fur: 1. **Scraping Oil**: Hang the pelt by the nose on a smooth circular board and scrape the fat from the back using a knife. Be careful to apply even pressure and avoid damaging the fur. Hard fats on the limbs, tail, and head can be trimmed with scissors. 2. **Washing the Skin**: After scraping, wash the pelt with clean sawdust multiple times to remove grease and dirt. Ensure the skin is dry and free of residue. Brush off any remaining sawdust and scrub the fur to make it clean and shiny. 3. **Stretching and Drying**: Place the fur inside out on a tarp and stretch it evenly. Secure the ears, head, and edges with pins. Allow it to dry partially before turning it right side out. Once about 50-60% dry, it can be stored or further processed. 4. **Squishing and Final Drying**: When the fur becomes firm, especially around the limbs and underparts, gently press it to ensure even drying. Once completely dry, hang it in a cool, well-ventilated area for final drying. These steps ensure that the fox fur maintains its high quality, making it suitable for both domestic and international markets.
