Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and other five major citrus categories are typically harvested during autumn and winter. At this time, the ambient temperature is relatively low, especially for winter-harvested oranges, which are often collected just before the ideal storage and transportation conditions. Natural cooling can be used to pre-cool the fruits effectively. However, in southern regions, the high humidity poses a significant challenge, leading to various fruit diseases. Among these, Penicillium rot is particularly contagious—once infected, the fruit can quickly deteriorate. Higher temperatures further accelerate the rotting process. To prevent this, antiseptic treatments are applied immediately after harvest. A certain amount of plant hormone is added to the solution to enhance cell activity, reduce pedicle withering, browning, and fruit drop.
During commercialization, it's essential to carefully perform pre-cooling, cleaning (including disease removal), and grading. Proper packaging is also crucial, especially for larger citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. Waxing the fruits not only improves their appearance but also increases their market value and shelf life.
Once packaged, the fruits must be transported efficiently to their destination. The key principles during transport include quick loading and unloading, careful handling, protection from heat and cold, and minimizing losses to ensure the quality of the fruits upon arrival.
For short-distance transport, vehicles such as trucks, tractors, animal carts, and rickshaws are commonly used. When loading, it's important to stack the fruits neatly and avoid excessive vibration. Covering the cargo helps protect the fruits from sunlight and rain. Water transport is another effective method, as it causes less mechanical damage. Although slower, it’s suitable for transporting large volumes of citrus.
For long-distance transport, especially within the country, trains are often used. Citrus destined for northern regions is usually transported in standard boxcars. It's important to send trained personnel to monitor the shipment and prevent damage from extreme temperatures, moisture, or freezing. In some cases, insulation equipment may be added for better protection. When transporting oranges to colder northern areas, proper ventilation is critical. Since citrus-growing regions tend to have milder climates, while the north experiences colder weather, insulated cars are recommended to maintain stable temperatures. Windbreaks should be installed on the doors and windows to prevent cold air from directly affecting the fruits near those areas.
