The World Health Organization recently reported that an outbreak of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli has occurred in Germany and deaths have occurred. Enterohemorrhagic E.coli O104 is a rare serotype and no previous outbreak has been reported. The patient developed acute diarrhea and abdominal pain, followed by hemolytic uremic syndrome, followed by multiple organ damage and even death.

The Ministry of Health requires that medical institutions at all levels must strengthen case monitoring and find cases of acute blood-like diarrhea and abdominal pain, or cases of clinical manifestations of hemolytic uremic syndrome such as acute renal failure, hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia. No travel history to Germany or its neighboring countries. Patients who have the above clinical manifestations and have travel history should immediately report to the local disease control agency and collect faeces and other relevant specimens for testing. After the disease control agencies verify the case information, they must immediately report to the local health administrative department and the superior disease control agency and carry out laboratory tests. The case report and specimen sampling and detection work may be temporarily referred to the “Monitoring Protocol for Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli O157:H7 Infectious Diarrhea” (2005). Enterohemorrhagic E. coli O104-positive specimens must be sent to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention for review.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that medical and health institutions at all levels must effectively implement health education for patients and close contacts, and require that they pay attention to personal hygiene, especially hand hygiene; disinfectant disposal and sanitation should be done to prevent the occurrence of excreta. All localities must earnestly strengthen public health education and remind those who have traveled to Germany and its neighboring countries to travel history since April of this year.
