“Micro Lab” takes only half an hour to complete the test

Release date: 2010-04-27

Recently, the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany has successfully developed a micro-laboratory system that can perform complex biological tests on site and get results in 30 minutes. The system is expected to be launched in the near future.

With the development of medical technology, many diseases have been confirmed by laboratory tests. However, patients have to face the reality that it takes a long time, sometimes even a few days to a week or two, to send the test from the sample to the doctor's hand. For many diseases, rapid diagnosis is the key to successful treatment. But in the future, patients may only need to wait a short time in the clinic to get the test results. Thanks to a collaboration between researchers at the seven research institutes in Fraunhofer, they have developed a miniature modular platform for in vitro diagnostics, for doctors who can directly target different biological samples such as blood and saliva. Perform a quick test in the office.

The core component of this miniature laboratory is a disposable plastic test box that can be matched to different sensors. At the time of the test, the doctor injects the corresponding reagent, which contains certain substances to confirm whether the sample contains the corresponding antigen. The test platform provides different assay methods for different problems. When performing the test, the doctor will inject the corresponding sample material into the test box and the test will be carried out automatically. Researchers say they have optimized the assay process to achieve up to 500 parallel detection reactions in a single analysis step. Therefore, even with complex analysis, doctors can quickly get test results.

Because the modular design principle of the in vitro diagnostic platform is very flexible, the researchers believe it is suitable for almost all biological problems. In the future, it is possible to test samples at the DNA level by developing new modules. In addition to the medical market, the platform can also be used in areas such as food analysis or doping control.
