Adding molasses to compound feed

Molasses is a by-product of the sugar industry such as sugar cane and sugar beet. In countries such as Europe and the United States, as well as in some Asian countries and regions, molasses is used as a cheap feed ingredient, and it is very common. However, in China, the use of molasses in feed processing is very limited due to the lack of necessary understanding of molasses and some feeding habits.

The sugar content of molasses is generally between 42% and 50%. Although its energy density is lower than that of corn, compared with corn, it has good taste, fast digestion and absorption and a price advantage. Some experiments also showed that adding 2% to 5% of molasses in the feed of pigs, chickens, and ducks was significantly higher than that of the control group in terms of increasing the daily weight gain and improving the particulate feed dust rate. In the compound feed processing technology, it is often added in the mixer, sprayed after granulation and added using the special equipment for molasses.

1. Add in the mixer. The specific method is to open two holes in the lower half of the horizontal mixer, equidistantly on one side of the spiral direction, install an electric or pneumatic ball valve and connect it with a 50mm diameter molasses pipe. The adding method is that after the mixer is mixed for 35 seconds (seconds), the two ball valves are switched and opened, and the opening time is 3 to 5 s (seconds). The duration is up to 30s (seconds). It should be noted that the amount added in the mixer cannot be too high, up to 2%.

It will affect the quality of the mix. The method for adding the two axis mixers is different. A long tube is added axially in the mixer and a small hole with a diameter of 10 mm is opened. The position of the hole varies from top to bottom depending on the distance from the entrance to the molasses. Molasses inlet plus electric (pneumatic) valves. After the feed enters the mixer and mixes for 5 seconds (seconds), the valve is opened and molasses is added. The duration is up to 15s (seconds). The amount of addition of this method can not be too high, can add up to 5%.

2. Spray after granulation. Strictly speaking, the spray after granulation is generally not pure molasses, mostly a mixture of molasses. Pure molasses spraying is very difficult. It is difficult to spray evenly even if it is heated. After spraying, it will also cause difficulties for subsequent packaging and transportation. Post-spraying products developed in some European countries generally use liquid fat mixed with molasses. This not only lowers the viscosity of the molasses, makes spraying easier, but also improves the appearance of the granules, improves palatability, and can also reduce feed costs. The molasses and other liquids are selected according to actual needs, or some materials that are easily lost under high temperature conditions, such as vitamins, are added to form a series of products.

3. Molasses-specific equipment. Molasses-specific add-on equipment is commonly used in Europe. In China, relevant equipment has also been produced. Under normal circumstances, the maximum amount of such equipment is about 5%.

In the process of adding molasses, the following points should be noted: 1 Molasses flows in the pipeline in the form of laminar flow. The closer to the wall the slower it is. Therefore, the diameter of the molasses delivery pipe should not be too small, typically 50mm. The diameter of the piping for transporting and handling molasses should be above 100mm. 2 If you use a flow meter, it is not suitable to use an ordinary flow meter. Use electromagnetic flowmeters. Because the electromagnetic flow meter has no moving parts, it will not hinder the flow of molasses. 3 Use molasses must be warmed. Temperature is controlled at 40°C. If the temperature is too high for a long time, it will form caramel. Heating should be heated with water and the water temperature should be controlled at 80°C. Pipes should be kept warm. 4 The speed of the molasses pump should not be too high and should generally be less than 200 revolutions per minute (minutes). Positive pressure pumps should also be used. The molasses filter should be placed on positive pressure and the mesh should not be less than 3mm. Funan County Agricultural Information Center
