Fermentation bed should pay attention to matters

Key Considerations for Setting Up a Fermentation Bed

1. Bacterial Dosage: For a pigsty accommodating around 15 pigs, it's recommended to use 2 kg of Jinbao fermentation aid. Start by spreading 1.6 kg initially, and add the remaining 0.4 kg gradually as needed. The size of the sty should be at least 10 square meters, and the pig density must not be too high. If the number of pigs is excessive, the accumulated urine may overwhelm the system and stop the fermentation process.

2. Dilution Method: The Goldfish fermentation aid should be mixed with rice bran, corn flour, or bran. A ratio of 1 part bacteria to 5 parts of the base material (like rice bran) is ideal. Fresh rice bran is more nutritious than old ones. You can also spray a small amount of 5% brown sugar water onto the mixture to enhance microbial activity.

3. Sawdust Amount: For an area of 20 square meters, the bedding should be at least 50 cm thick, requiring approximately 10 cubic meters of sawdust. Too thin will prevent proper fermentation, while too thick may cause overheating or rapid decomposition. The fermentation aid can be evenly spread across the entire bed or applied in layers. It’s best to use dry sawdust or fresh litter, and if possible, expose it to sunlight for natural sterilization. If the bedding becomes too dry and affects the pigs’ breathing, mist the surface lightly with water or brown sugar solution. Normally, no additional water should be added, as the waste from the pigs will naturally maintain the right moisture level over time.

4. Alternative Litter Materials: If sawdust is unavailable, you can use rice husks, straw, or other organic materials as alternatives. However, the top 20 cm of the bed should still be covered with sawdust. Rice husks need to be crushed, and straw should be cut into short pieces (less than 0.5 cm) or finely chopped but not overly fine.

5. Humidity Control: Maintain a balanced moisture level in the bedding. If it becomes too dry and starts to create dust, lightly spray water on the surface. After pigs urinate, the humidity should not exceed 65%. Avoid any rainwater or groundwater from entering the bed. The standard size of the sty should be at least 20 square meters, and it's not advisable to use areas smaller than 10 square meters for fermentation beds.
