Celery can be affected by rotten heart disease throughout its entire growth cycle, but the condition is most severe during the seedling stage. Early infection can lead to poor germination and uneven emergence. Once infected after transplanting, seedlings often show symptoms such as spots on the growing point, browning of the heart, necrosis, and dry rot. These symptoms spread from the inner leaves to the outer ones, while the disease also progresses from the roots, causing browning and necrosis of root tissues. As a result, root development becomes abnormal, and the plants stop growing, leading to stunted or clustered shoots. In severe cases, the seedlings may die, reducing the overall quality of the vegetable produce.
When the disease appears in milder forms, it continues to develop as the seedlings grow, causing the lower petioles to turn brown and eventually rot from bottom to top. The primary causes of this disease include high levels of pathogenic bacteria in the seeds used for planting and a high incidence rate. Additionally, elevated soil temperatures in greenhouses can significantly worsen the condition.
To prevent and manage the disease, several effective measures can be taken:
1. **Seed Treatment with Chemicals**: Before sowing, seeds should be coated with 47% Garneton WP at a rate of 0.3% of the seed weight, or soaked in a 400-fold dilution of 47% Garneton WP for 20–30 minutes before planting.
2. **Chemical Spraying**: In the early stages of the disease, infected seedlings should be removed immediately, and the remaining plants should be sprayed with a preventive treatment. Options include 77% Thiram WP diluted 500 times, 30% Copper Oxychloride Water Agent diluted 350 times, or 500-fold diluted Streptomycin.
3. **Removal of Diseased Seedlings**: Infected seedlings that show signs of necrosis should be promptly removed and disposed of outside the greenhouse to prevent further spread of the disease, which could otherwise lead to reduced yields and economic losses.
By implementing these strategies, growers can effectively reduce the risk of rotten heart disease and ensure healthier celery crops. It's important to monitor the plants regularly and take action at the first sign of infection to minimize damage.
