Feed for different fish feeds

Fish feed is one of the most significant expenses in fish farming. Adopting scientific feeding practices not only promotes the healthy growth and rapid weight gain of fish, but also helps reduce feed waste, lower overall production costs, and significantly improve the efficiency of fish farming operations. There are seven main types of fish feed, each with specific feeding methods: First, grain-based feed. Fish pellets typically range from 2.5 to 8 mm in diameter and 5 to 10 mm in length, making them suitable for direct feeding into ponds. Before using, it's important to check the moisture content. If the feed is too wet, it should be dried first before being given to the fish. If the feed has spoiled, it must not be used to avoid poisoning the fish. Second, cake feed. For smaller fish, the cake should be broken into smaller pieces, soaked, and refined before feeding. Larger fish can be fed whole or soaked, depending on their size and feeding habits. Third, cereal feed. Large grains like corn should be processed and crushed before being fed to fish. Smaller grains, such as wheat or rice, can be germinated and then fed to fish. Germinated grains are more nutritious and easier for fish to digest, helping them gain weight quickly. Fourth, green feed. Medium to large fish can be fed fresh green vegetables directly after washing. For smaller fish, the greens should be chopped or beaten, mixed with 0.2% salt, and then combined with bran and soda to make it more palatable. This mixture is often cooked and then sprinkled into the water. Fifth, dregs feed. These are by-products such as soybean meal or rice bran. They should be soaked before feeding. For medium to large fish, fermentation is recommended to enhance flavor. Start with small amounts and gradually increase up to no more than 30% of the daily feed ration. Sixth, protein feed. Animal-based proteins like worms, fly larvae, and insects can be fed directly to fish or dried and ground into powder to mix with other feeds. When using bulk animal protein, it should be chopped, ground, and formed into small pellets for better digestion. Seventh, manure feed. Chicken, pig, and cow dung are all valuable sources of nutrients for fish. After drying and grinding into powder, they should be mixed with other feeds in appropriate proportions. Typically, chicken manure should not exceed 40–50%, cow dung 50–70%, and pig manure 30–50% of the total feed mixture. By carefully managing these feeding methods, fish farmers can optimize feed utilization, improve fish health, and ultimately boost profitability. It’s essential to monitor the quality of all feed materials and adjust feeding strategies based on the species and stage of development of the fish.
