Litchi can be planted in both spring and autumn, but it's important to do so after the shoots have fully matured. If seedlings are already established with a root ball, they can be planted throughout the year. However, during winter, lower temperatures slow down the growth of litchi seedlings. Therefore, the most common planting seasons are spring, summer, and autumn.
Spring planting is typically done between February and the Qingming period. During this time, there's usually enough rainfall and a mild climate, which means that watering after planting may not be necessary. This method saves labor and promotes healthy root activity and new shoot growth, leading to a higher survival rate. It’s especially suitable for dry areas or regions with limited water sources.
Summer planting takes place when temperatures are high and rainfall is abundant. Litchi shoots grow quickly during this time. However, due to strong sunlight and high evaporation rates, it's best to avoid planting during the hottest part of the day. After planting, it's recommended to cover the tree with shade cloth to protect it from excessive heat and moisture loss.
Autumn planting usually occurs between September and October. At this time, the weather begins to cool, but it's still warm enough for litchi to sprout and root. After planting, the trees can develop one new root and one new shoot. However, in southern China, autumn droughts are common, so timely watering is essential to help the seedlings recover quickly. In areas with limited water access, autumn planting may not be ideal because the season is too late. If the seedlings don't establish roots before winter, their survival rate can be significantly reduced.
