Due to these climatic challenges, it's difficult for strawberries to thrive naturally in southern China and some coastal areas after June. High temperatures also increase the risk of disease in seedlings. As a result, regions south of Shijiazhuang are generally unsuitable for local seedling propagation. To achieve high yields, it's essential to bring in properly grown seedlings from the north.
Selecting the right varieties is crucial when implementing "North Miaonan Planting." Currently, many Chinese growers cultivate common varieties like "All Stars," "Baojiao," "Fengxiang," and "Maria," which suffer from declining quality and low productivity. To improve results, early-maturing, high-yield, and marketable varieties should be prioritized.
Two promising new varieties suitable for "North Miaonan Planting" are:
1. **US No. 5**: An exceptionally early-maturing variety that produces fruit around New Year’s Day after autumn planting. It features large, firm, bright red fruits with a rich flavor, high sweetness, and a very short dormancy period, allowing for an extended harvest of 2-3 months. Each fruit weighs about 50 grams, and a single plant can weigh over 500 grams, yielding an average of 2,500 to 3,500 kg per mu.
2. **Spain No. 3**: Another early-maturing variety ideal for pre-Christmas harvesting. It produces large, bright red fruits with excellent transportability and a sweet taste. Its roots are well-developed, and it is resistant to alkaline soil. It has a very short dormancy period, enabling a continuous harvest of 3-4 months. A single plant can weigh over 500 grams, with an average yield of 30,000 to 40,000 kg per mu.
By combining proper planting techniques with the right variety selection, southern farmers can significantly improve their strawberry production and meet market demands effectively.
