The concept of pig rearing on a fermentation bed was first discovered by the Japanese and later applied in practical farming. Since 1992, researchers at Kagoshima University in Japan began systematic studies on this method, gradually developing a complete technical standard. 1. Sawdust Quantity: For an area of 20 square meters, the bedding layer should be at least 50 cm thick, requiring about 6–10 cubic meters of sawdust. Too thin won’t support fermentation, while too thick may cause excessive internal heat. Fermentation additives can be evenly spread throughout the litter or in 3–4 layers. Use dry old sawdust whenever possible; if using fresh sawdust, let it dry before spreading.
2. Bacterial Dosage: For 20 pigs (or around 15), use 2 kg of Jinbao fermentation agent. Apply 1.6 kg at once, and use the remaining for supplementation. The sty area should not be less than 10 square meters, and the pig density shouldn’t be too high, as overloading with urine can stop the fermentation process.
3. Dilution Method: Mix the Jinbao agent with rice bran (or corn flour, or bran) in a ratio of at least 1:5. Fresh rice bran provides better nutrients than old ones. Optionally, spray a 5% brown sugar water solution onto the mixture to enhance microbial activity.
4. Temperature Control: You can manually control the fermentation temperature and rhythm. To speed up the process, consider increasing the bacterial dosage, pre-activating the bacteria with brown sugar water, adding more fresh rice bran or urea water, increasing the sawdust layer thickness, turning and punching more often, and slightly increasing the moisture level (but not exceeding 70%, to avoid bad odors from spoilage bacteria). Lower temperatures can be adjusted accordingly. The internal temperature should stay below 50°C, the core layer under 60°C, and the surface below 25–30°C.
5. Alternative Litter Materials: Whenever possible, use sawdust. If unavailable, you can use rice husks or straw, but cover the top with at least 30 cm of sawdust. Note that rice husks should be crushed, and straw cut into small pieces (less than 0.5 mm) or broken down, but not too fine.
6. Moisture Management: Keep the humidity of the bedding under control. If the litter is too dry, mist the surface lightly. After pigs urinate, the moisture should not exceed 65%. Avoid any rainwater or groundwater seeping into the bed. The recommended sty area is at least 20 square meters (adjustable based on the number of animals), and areas smaller than 10 square meters are not suitable for fermentation beds.
7. Fermentation Status: Once operating normally, the lower layer of the bed will darken, emit no odor, and have a slight wine-like smell. The temperature remains stable, and white mycelium may appear occasionally.
