Zhu Lan

Zhulan, also known as cyanine or Chrysanthemum, is a beautiful evergreen shrub belonging to the family Asteraceae. It is commonly referred to as "pearl orchid" due to its delicate and elegant appearance. This plant typically grows to a height of 30–70 cm, with thick, sturdy stems that give it a strong and resilient structure. Its leaves are stalked, elliptical in shape, measuring about 7–8 cm in length, with a blunt tip and a wedge-shaped base. The leaves are thick yet soft, smooth to the touch, and remain green throughout the year. From May to June, Zhulan produces clusters of small, yellow-green flowers that resemble fish eggs, with no petals but a pleasant blue fragrance. After flowering, the plant develops oval-shaped drupes containing a single seed. These characteristics make it an attractive ornamental plant, especially for indoor spaces. Native to China, Japan, and North Korea, Zhulan thrives in subtropical low mountain regions. It is commonly found wild across southern China. This plant prefers warm and humid conditions, and it does not tolerate direct sunlight or extreme cold. It requires well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter to grow healthily. For propagation, Zhulan can be reproduced through division or cuttings. When dividing, ensure each section has as much soil as possible around the roots. Alternatively, you can take cuttings from new growth in early September. Cut the stems into 10–15 cm sections, leaving the top two leaves intact. Insert the base of the cutting 3–5 cm into a pot filled with moist soil, and place it in a shaded area. Rooting usually occurs by mid-October. In terms of care, Zhulan should be watered according to the dry-wet cycle—avoid overwatering. Apply diluted liquid fertilizer once or twice in autumn and early spring to promote healthy growth. During summer, ensure good air circulation to prevent heat stress. In winter, protect the plant from frost and cold winds. Zhulan is highly valued for its evergreen foliage and attractive blooms, making it one of the top choices for potted plants. Due to its shade tolerance, it is ideal for indoor decoration and is often placed on tables, desks, or in living rooms for aesthetic purposes. Whether used as a decorative plant or for its subtle beauty, Zhulan adds a touch of nature to any space.
