Unexpected use of fungi - treating cancer

US researchers recently announced that a new drug, developed using nanotechnology and a fungus that was accidentally contaminated during lab tests, may show promising effects against various types of **cancer**. The drug, named **Lodamin**, has been refined over the years, building on the pioneering work of cancer researcher **Judah Folkman**, who first proposed the concept of **angiogenesis therapy**—a treatment strategy that aims to starve tumors by cutting off their blood supply. Lodamin is the result of two decades of research led by Volkmann and his team. In a study published in *Nature Biotechnology*, his colleagues reported that this new angiogenesis inhibitor shows no significant side effects. Early tests on mice revealed that Lodamin is effective against a wide range of tumors, including breast, neuroblastoma, uterine, prostate, and brain cancers. It not only helps prevent the formation of early-stage tumors but also stops the spread of cancerous cells throughout the body. One of the most striking observations from the experiment was described as “clear visible liver.” Researchers noted that in the test group, the livers were clearly visible, while the control group’s livers were completely covered in tumors. Lodamin directly targets **tumor cells**, effectively suppressing the growth of melanoma and lung cancer without causing major side effects. In the experiment, mice that did not receive Lodamin were fed a regular diet and experienced severe tumor growth, leading to swollen livers. In contrast, the livers and spleens of the treated mice remained normal. After 20 days, seven of the untreated mice had died, while all the mice in the treatment group survived. This breakthrough highlights the potential of combining nanotechnology with biological compounds to develop more effective and safer cancer treatments. Researchers are now planning further studies to explore the drug’s effectiveness in human trials. **Core keywords**: cancer, tumor cells **Related article**: Chengdu Bilang Experimental Equipment Co., Ltd. ultrasonic cell pulverization **American trials use light nanotechnology and biomolecules to treat cancer**
