The results showed that 64% of all patients had ipsilateral MRS findings on the same side as the epileptogenic focus, compared with 72% of patients with good postoperative outcomes. Compared with those with MRS showing bilateral abnormalities, MRS showed a higher proportion of postoperative seizures in patients with ipsilateral abnormalities (OR=4.891).
The evaluator concluded that MRS is still a research tool with clinical potential. The above studies showed that MRS showed a correlation with good postoperative clinical outcome if it showed an ipsilateral abnormality consistent with the epileptogenic focus. The predictive power of MRS for postoperative outcomes may depend on the population being evaluated and should be prospectively studied in patients with MRI-negative or EEG-characterized non-constrained epilepsy.
