Japan's New Solar Technology Lets Your "Plant" Abandon Water from Electricity

Japan's AIST (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology), in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation and Tokki Corporation, has developed an innovative solar cell prototype that mimics the structure of a plant leaf. As shown in the image, this potted plant features bright green solar cells that resemble real leaves. The thin-film solar cell is constructed using a plastic substrate, a phthalocyanine dye layer, and fullerenes—molecules composed of carbon in a spherical shape. Eight individual solar cells, each measuring 7.5 cm², are connected to form a larger module covering approximately 60 cm². To enhance the module’s durability, the team applied an ultra-thin protective film using printing technology, effectively blocking moisture and oxygen from penetrating the cells. This advancement ensures longer lifespan and reliability under various environmental conditions. AIST’s goal in developing this breakthrough is to expand the application of ultra-thin solar cells into key areas such as building materials, exterior walls, windows, clothing, household items, leisure products, outdoor equipment, and even toys. By integrating solar technology into everyday objects, the project aims to create a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.

Ammonium Bicarbonate

Ammonium Bicarbonate (ABC) is a widely used nitrogen fertilizer that provides essential nutrients for plant growth. It is a solid, white crystalline compound with high solubility in water, making it easy for crops to absorb. As a cost-effective nitrogen source, ABC delivers readily available ammonium nitrogen, promoting strong vegetative growth and enhancing chlorophyll production.Ammonium Bicarbonate Fertilizer

Despite its benefits, ABC is sensitive to temperature and air exposure, leading to potential nitrogen loss through volatilization. To maximize efficiency, farmers should apply it directly into the soil and avoid excessive surface exposure. Proper storage in sealed containers can help maintain its effectiveness.Nitrogen Fertilizer Ammonium Bicarbonate

ABC is particularly suitable for alkaline and neutral soils, where its ammonium form helps improve nutrient uptake. Compared to other nitrogen fertilizers, it has a lower environmental impact when properly managed, making it a preferred choice for sustainable farming practices.Agricultural Ammonium Bicarbonate
