Strelitzia reginae (bird of paradise)

Scientific name: Strelizia reginae

Common Name: Bird of Paradise, also known as the "Bliss Bird Flower."

Family and Genus: Belongs to the genus Strelitzia, part of the family Strelitziaceae.

Origin and Distribution: Native to South Africa, this plant is now widely cultivated throughout China. Its striking foliage and vibrant flowers make it a popular ornamental plant. The Bird of Paradise flower symbolizes joy, freedom, and new beginnings, making it a favorite in gardens and floral arrangements.

Morphological Features: This perennial herb has a thick, fleshy root system with no visible stem above ground. The leaves are arranged alternately on a short, central stem, forming a fan-like structure. Each leaf is long and narrow, measuring 20–40 cm in length and 8–5 cm in width, with a leathery texture. They have a central groove and parallel veins. The inflorescence grows from the leaf axils, rising above the foliage. It features 6–8 large, showy flowers arranged in an iridescent pattern, often more than 10 flowering stems per inflorescence. The sepals are green with purplish-red edges, reaching up to 15–20 cm in length. The flowers themselves are bisexual and bilaterally symmetrical, with three orange-yellow sepals and three petals. Two of the petals are fused at the base, while the central petal resembles a boat with ear-like lobes, matching the length of the sepals. The overall appearance of the bloom resembles a graceful crane in flight.

Ecological Habits: Strelitzia reginae thrives in warm climates and requires temperatures between 23–25°C for optimal growth. It can tolerate minimum winter temperatures of 5°C but should be protected from frost. In summer, it can withstand high temperatures up to 40°C, though prolonged exposure above 27°C during the flowering stage may cause damage to buds or even lead to necrosis. Strong sunlight combined with heat can cause sunburn. The ideal humidity level is 60–70%, and the soil should be deep, well-drained, rich in organic matter, and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.0). Regular watering and proper care will ensure healthy growth and stunning blooms.
