Harvesting and seed treatment of tomato hybrids
Harvest of Hybrid Fruits
When the artificially emasculated and pollinated hybrid tomatoes change from yellow to red, it is essential to carefully inspect and remove any allelopathic fruits, deformed fruits, and self-pollinated ones individually, line by line. This identification is based on the marks made during the artificial emasculation and pollination process. Once the fruits are fully mature, they should be harvested. During harvesting, make sure to thoroughly remove all heterozygous, malformed, and self-pollinated fruits before storing them in a safe location. Allow the fruits to ripen for one or two more days, then separate the fruits and extract the seeds.Seed Treatment of Hybrid Fruits
After collecting the fruits, they should be ripened first to facilitate the separation of pulp and seeds. It is important to avoid using metal tools such as iron or aluminum during this process, as contact with metal can cause the seed coat to darken, which may negatively affect the commercial value of the seeds. Two common processing methods are typically used:First, when the seed production area is small and the quantity of fruits harvested at each time is limited, a knife can be used to cut the fruits into halves. Then, the seeds along with the pulp can be squeezed into large plastic or porcelain basins filled with water. If the pulp is not clean, it can be washed in the water (the pulp can be eaten as food or used as animal feed). The mixture of pulp, seeds, and water is left overnight to ferment. After that, place the pulp and seeds along with the water into a plastic textile bag and manually squeeze out most of the pulp and water. Transfer the mixture into a pot, rub the seeds by hand while washing them 2-3 times to ensure they are clean. Once cleaned, spread the seeds on a wooden board or reeds to dry. Finally, store the dried seeds in a cool and dry place for long-term preservation.
Second, when the seed production area is large and a significant amount of fruits is harvested at once, a pit can be dug, or a large plastic sheet or porcelain bowl can be used. After ripening, the fruits are placed into the pit or bowl. Use a wooden tool to crush the fruits or wear rubber shoes to step on them, allowing them to ferment overnight. Then, use a bamboo sieve to filter out the pulp (which can be used as livestock feed). Next, transfer the remaining pulp and seeds into a large water basin, stir with a wooden stick, and pour the mixture into a plastic woven bag. Squeeze out most of the pulp and water, then place the mixture into a water basin. Rub the seeds as if washing rice, and rinse them 2-3 times until clean. The drying and storage process is the same as the first method, ensuring the seeds remain viable and high quality for future planting.
