Gas-fueled internal combustion engines, such as gas engines, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) engines, and natural gas engines, can be directly fueled with biogas without requiring major modifications. As long as the biogas is properly channeled into the original gas mixture system, it can effectively replace conventional gases like natural gas or LPG to power the engine. This makes biogas a viable alternative fuel for these types of engines.
When using biogas in gas-fueled internal combustion engines—such as coal gas engines, LPG engines, or natural gas engines—no significant alterations are needed. Simply connect the biogas pipeline directly to the original fuel intake system within the carburetor or mixer. This allows the engine to run on biogas instead of traditional fuels, making it a more sustainable and cost-effective option. The process is straightforward and can be implemented quickly.
For gasoline engines, biogas can also serve as an alternative fuel. In most cases, the original structure of the engine remains unchanged. A biogas-air mixer is typically added before the carburetor, allowing the engine to operate on biogas instead of gasoline. If biogas supply is limited, the engine can easily switch back to gasoline. However, this method is not suitable for two-stroke gasoline engines that rely on oil mixed with fuel for lubrication, such as small agricultural engines or motorcycle engines. These engines require oil to function properly, and running them solely on biogas could lead to severe engine damage due to lack of lubrication.
When converting diesel engines to run on biogas, additional considerations are necessary. Diesel engines operate by compressing air in the cylinder until it reaches a high temperature (480–680°C), which ignites the diesel fuel. Biogas, however, has a higher ignition temperature (680–840°C), making it harder to ignite under normal compression. Therefore, the biogas must be ignited before the compression stroke is completed. Two common ignition methods are used: diesel ignition, where a small amount of diesel is used to ignite the biogas, and electric ignition, which uses spark plugs similar to those in gasoline engines. Both approaches allow diesel engines to run efficiently on biogas, offering a cleaner and more renewable energy source.
