Use "chlorine-containing" fertilizers with caution

Recently, many areas in Xiangshan County, such as sugarcane in Dandong, sweet potato in Tuci, and citrus in Citrus sinensis, have caused yellowing and withering of leaves. The main reason is that: Farmers use a large amount of "chlorine-containing" compound fertilizers, because in the case of drought and less rain, the application of "chlorine" fertilizers causes increased accumulation of chloride ions in the soil, increased residual chlorine ions in the soil, and enhanced soil acidity. This increases the solubility of active aluminum and iron in the soil and aggravates the toxic effects on crops. Sugar cane, sweet potato, and citrus are all avoiding “chlorine” crops. Applying “chlorine” fertilizers increases the poisoning to crops. The effect caused yellowing and withering of the leaves of sugarcane, sweet potato, citrus and other crops. For this reason, when this phenomenon occurs in growing crops, the best way is to apply more organic fertilizer or lime to reduce the acidity of the soil. Fertilizers containing “chlorine” should be used mainly in areas or seasons where rainfall is high and where irrigation conditions exist. In rainy areas or seasons, chlorine ions can be leached with water after application of chemical fertilizers containing “chlorine”, so chlorine ions brought into the soil with fertilizers will not cause “chloride harm” due to accumulation. In salinized soils, the chlorine-containing fertilizers should be used less or not because of higher chloride ion content. Chloride can inhibit seed germination, reduce germination rate and emergence rate. Therefore, fertilizers containing “chlorine” should be applied early and deep so that the soil can be adsorbed, chloride ions can be lost, and the roots of crops can be affected by chlorine. The roots of crops are mostly concentrated in the 10-25cm soil layer. Therefore, the application of “chlorine” fertilizer as the base fertilizer layer, strips and holes should be below 8-9cm.
